Following The Fantasy
For those of you who don't know, this month marks the seventh anniversary for the We <3 RP shopping event. As an avid role player, I've been a long time fan of this monthly collection of discounted or exclusive items from some of my favorite designers. So when I found out they were also hosting a photography contest in honor of the occasion I simply couldn't resist the temptation to get my photo on. Little did I know that I'd be so pleased with the results a story would spark inspiration as well! So I offer you a few of my favorite things in one post. A fantasy photo, a short tale, and celebration of a truly wonderful event hitting an impressive landmark. (Credits at the bottom)
Thank you for reading,
Whether it was the constant droning chorus of the obscured insects, the oppressive humidity which made every part of her feel damp, or the incessant chatter from the hovering figure in front of her; she just couldn't tell. Perhaps it was all of these things and more, but her mood was sinking faster than her boots in the mud. Heaving a sigh and grimacing at the combination of moist leaves and rotting wood on her tongue, she held up one finger in front of the pesky pixie. Given that her single digit nearly blotted out the azure figure, this effectively stemmed the stream of high pitched words it kept chattering and made her grin to herself.
"Let me get this straight. No. My turn."
Letting the sounds of the water cascading over rocks nearby fill the moment in concert with other buzzing of nature around them just to annoy the creature after interrupting it, she slowly lowered her hand. Continuing while she counted off the points she'd been able to glean so far on her fingers one by one.
"You don't know who took them. You don't know where they went. You don't even know why they were taken given that you can't find anything else has been touched. Yet you're certain your family has been kidnapped because you all guard some ancient rocks?"
The derision of her tone was probably a bit much and it set the little critter off even more agitated than before. She hadn't thought that possible. Yet with it's wings flapping wildly making it shoot up and down before her and it's cyan glow beginning to strobe, she'd clearly struck a nerve. Assuming they had any, did they? She wasn't sure. Tones growing more and more shrill drew her from her mental tangent and she shook her head.
"Ok. Sorry. Ancient glowing rocks of some unknown but assuredly important purpose. Are you sure they didn't just, I don't know... go out for some dinner?"
Wrong thing to say. Sneezing at the amount of sparkling dust the pixie ended up smacking her in the face with while it preformed intricate and admittedly beautiful somersaults and twirls, she rubbed her face. Glancing at her hand she groaned, she'd be a glittering mess for a week after this. Finally holding up both hands as much to fend off another attack which might well be on purpose this time, she took a step closer to the careening figure.
"Calm down, calm down. I'll help. No idea what it is I can do, but you know I'll help."
Checking her belt for the gear she always had on her and marking the location with her compass as well as the landmarks, she drew her saber. A quick adjustment on her goggles had her field of vision less focused on the pixie's form and taking in more of their surroundings for the trek. Finally giving a single nod she let the flat of her bald rest against her shoulder.
"Alright, let's go. Lead the way..."
